The temperature in bub’s room has a real impact on their quality of sleep.
The ideal sleep temperature for your little one is between 19-21 degrees Celsius.
Moving from spring to summer, it can be difficult to regulate the sleep temperature in your baby’s room. So, to make this one less thing for you to worry about, we’ve got 5 tips on how to regulate the sleep temperature in bub's room.
1. Thermometer
It’s best to know what temperature you're working with. Being able to monitor the temperature in their space will let you know to what degree you need to cool the room down to.
Most sleep monitors will show the room temperature, but if yours doesn’t, you will be able to get a thermometer at any baby supply store!
2. Bedding
Either a cotton or bamboo cover sheet is the best way to go for baby’s sleeping space. These materials are breathable and will ensure no unnecessary heat is retained, helping regulate the sleep temperature.
3. Clothing
A diaper and muslin cloth swaddle.
This set up is breathable and light, while keeping bub wrapped and safe – this is ideal sleepwear if your baby is a newborn or cannot roll over yet.
Once your little one can roll over on their own, it’s no longer safe for them to be swaddled. If this is your circumstance then just a summer-onesie (short-sleeved) and a diaper will do!
4. Regulation
Some houses have a central cooling that keeps the house at a consistent temperature, this is great but unfortunately, it’s not in all homes and running the cooling all summer long is not always the best financial decision.
We recommend standing fans. Keeping the fan away from where your baby is sleeping, preferably below crib height, allows for the air to circulate. This helps cool down the room.
An added benefit of this is that it allows for fresh breathing air for your little one while they’re asleep. By using a fan when they’re down for a nap or bedtime decreases the risk of SIDS by 72%, shown in a study done by California health care provider Kaiser Permanente.
5. Keep an eye on them
Every baby is different, but what they have in common is their inability to regulate their body temperature like we can as adults.
After taking the above precautions to keep the sleep temperature in an ideal range, it’s important to still regularly check that they’re not overheating.
A good indication of your little one’s body temperature is through their ears and cheeks. If they are red and hot, then you know they may be too warm. As well as this, you can tell by the back of their neck, checking to see if it is damp with sweat.
Checking by their hands or feet is not accurate as they may be cooler than the rest of the body. This is very normal but not a good way of determining their overall body temperature.
