Temperature Control for Babies

The temperature in bub’s room has a real impact on their quality of sleep.

The ideal sleep temperature for your little one is between 19-21 degrees Celsius.

Moving from season to season, it can be difficult to regulate the sleep temperature in your baby’s room. So, to make this one less thing for you to worry about, we’ve got 4 tips on how to regulate the sleep temperature in bub's room.

1. Thermometer

It’s best to know what temperature you're working with. Being able to monitor the temperature in their space will let you know to what degree you need to cool or heat the room down or up to.

Most sleep monitors will show the room temperature, but if yours doesn’t, you will be able to get a thermometer at any baby supply store!

2. Bedding

Either a cotton or bamboo cover sheet is the best way to go for baby’s sleeping space. These materials are breathable and will ensure no unnecessary heat is retained, helping regulate the sleep temperature.

3. Clothing

With the bedding beneath your baby sorted, it is always best to use a sleeping suit suitable in size and tog for the temperature for your area.

A particular favourite of ours is Love to Dream. They have a range swaddles dependent on age, whether you're little one is transitioning out of a full swaddle (when they've begun to roll) or if they've moved into a full sleep suit.

Again, it is totally dependent on the area you live in and your day time and night time temperature what your little one should wear beneath their swaddles or sleep suit, but it is always best to start with a onesie and bed socks, adding appropriate bedtime layers based on both your little ones temperature and the temperature of their sleeping space.

A good way to check baby’s temperature is to feel the baby’s back or tummy, which should feel warm (don’t worry if baby’s hands and feet feel cool, this is normal). (sourced directly from rednose.org.au)

We advise to keep away from loose blankets and bedding within the cot as to keep with SIDS safe sleeping.

Never have your baby wearing a hat to bed. They predominately regulate their temperature through their head.

4. Keep an eye on them

Every baby is different, but what they have in common is their inability to regulate their body temperature like we can as adults.

After taking the above precautions to keep the sleep temperature in an ideal range and to ensure they're dressed comfortable, not too hot or not too cold, it’s important to still regularly check that they’re not overheating.
